These are the questions Malaysian importers and exporters ask DNE most often, with short answers and a link to the full guide for each. They cover customs clearance, sea and air freight, container haulage and the costs that catch people out. For official duty and permit details we work from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

Do I need a customs broker or a freight forwarder in Malaysia?

A freight forwarder arranges the shipping; a customs agent (broker) clears the goods with JKDM. DNE is both, so one team handles the move and the clearance. The full distinction is in customs broker vs freight forwarder.

How long does customs clearance take at Port Klang?

A clean declaration with complete documents and no physical inspection can clear within a day; queries, examinations or missing permits add days. The sequence is in customs clearance step by step.

How much import duty and SST will I pay?

Import duty is a percentage set by your HS code; sales tax under SST is a standard 10% on the CIF value of most goods. Work it out with the duty + SST calculator guide.

How do I find the right HS code for my product?

The HS code is the global classification that sets your duty and permits. Getting it wrong is costly either way. See how to find your HS code in Malaysia.

Should I ship FCL or LCL?

FCL (a full container) is usually cheaper per unit once you fill about half a container; LCL (shared) suits smaller volumes but adds consolidation handling. Compare them in FCL vs LCL shipping.

Is sea or air freight better for my cargo?

Sea is far cheaper per kilogram and suits bulky, non-urgent goods; air is faster and suits high-value or urgent cargo. The trade-off is in air vs sea freight.

What is demurrage, and how do I avoid it?

Demurrage is charged when a container sits in the port beyond its free time; detention is charged when you hold it too long at your site. Prompt haulage avoids both — see seven ways to avoid them.

Do I need an import permit?

Many goods are restricted and need a permit from MITI, SIRIM, MAQIS or another agency before clearance. Check prohibited and restricted imports and import permits.

Which Incoterm should I agree with my supplier?

Your Incoterm (FOB, CIF, DDP and others) decides who pays for and risks each leg. Agreeing the wrong one shifts unexpected cost onto you. See Incoterms for importers.

How much does container haulage from Port Klang cost?

A haulage rate is built from a base tariff (by distance), tolls and a fuel adjustment factor, with 20ft and 40ft priced differently. The breakdown is in haulage rates and routes.

What does it really cost to import a container?

Your real number is the landed cost — goods plus freight, duty, SST, handling, haulage and any demurrage. We work a full example in the true cost of importing a container.

What is VGM and do I need it to export?

For sea exports, the verified gross mass of a packed container must be declared before it can be loaded, under SOLAS rules. See VGM for Port Klang exporters.

Which Port Klang terminal will my cargo use — Westports or Northport?

It depends on the shipping line and service, and it affects haulage and timing. The differences are in the Westport vs Northport guide.

Does DNE handle both imports and exports?

Yes — DNE handles import and export customs clearance, sea and air freight, and inland container haulage end to end, for both FCL and LCL cargo. See our services.
